Create a blog sitemap
Creating a blog sitemap is easy and can increase your search engine ranking…

Many search engines either require a sitemap (Ask) or prefer you include one (Google). For more info in listing your blog on search engines, have a peak at this previous post.

Firstly

Copy and paste this code into a text editor like Notepad or Blocknote:

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>
<urlset xmlns=”http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9″>
<url>
<loc>http://www.YourBlogsDomainHere.com/</loc>
<lastmod>2005-01-01</lastmod>
<changefreq>monthly</changefreq>
</url>

</urlset>

Your blog information needs to be included in the bold section.

- <lastmod> refers to when you last posted- <changefreq> will let the engine know when to update your listing

Secondly

Save the file as sitemap.xml a root directory (if you are not sure what your root directory is, have a look at the Web dictionary).

    Your site is a great discovery…thanks!

    About the sitemap - having saved the code to Notebook, where do I place it on my blog?

    Hi Mike, thank YOU for popping in! :)

    The file for you sitemap now needs to be saved in the root directory.

    So, it should in the end have a URL like this: http://www.blogname.com/sitemap.xml

    If you don’t know how to access your FTP let me know and we’ll find a solution.

    Love, Lilly

    Wow, thanks, Lilly! I see what you mean - but I just use one of the blogspot templates. I didn’t have to get into the FTP thing.
    Should I create a new page through Bravenet, or whatever, and paste the text there? Or is there a better way somehow on blogspot ?

    I’ve found so many articles on your site that I need to know about to continue successfully with my site. I need to know about creating a site map. Thanks for the great info. Also I know other new bloggers who are looking for free images. Your site is so easy to understand and informative. Now I just need to find the time to create the site map. Thanks.

    Hi Lilly. I have just discovered that Blogger automatically creates a sitemap, so I didn’t need to panic!

    :) Great! I was on the brink of setting up my own blogger-tester account to walk you through it. (think I’ll set one up anyway!) Ciao, Lilly

    I’m back again, so far, I’ve found three such handy articles, the color calculator and the site map and the free images.
    What a great site for bloggers! Thank you LillyMouse. LillyMouse will be my blogging advisor now.

    Hi again, Lilly.
    Did you ever test Blogger? I can’t help thinking that an additional, independant sitemap on Google may not be a bad idea. Or would that clash with Bloggers and cause problems?
