Blog favicons

You may be wondering: what the hell is a blog favicon?

Look at the browser URL bar or the tab at the top of this window if you are using Firefox. You will notice a small blue square icon with the letters, ‘LM’, in orange. This Lilly Mouse’s favicon.

Sometimes called a ‘bookmark icon’, a blog favicon easily creates blog identity and ensures readers can find your blog amongst the millions of windows they have opened up.

Here is how to create your blog favicon…

Step 1:

Design a blog favicon using your favourite graphics package. Fireworks is a great, but is expensive. Your MS Paint, found in your accessories is also a very simple but useful tool.

Create a square not larger than 16×16 pixels.

The background colour can be altered and an image included.

Keep it simple and easily recognisable.

Have a look at these examples of popular favicons:

Google Google favicon

Blogger Blogger Favicon

Yahoo Yahoo Favicon

CNN CNN Favicon

Amazon Amazon Favicon

Apple Macintosh Mac Favicon

Save your blog favicon as, favicon.ico, so that it is recognised by browsers.

Step 2:

Using FTP or your blog’s hosts website, upload your blog favicon to your main directory. So the URL for it should be: www.yourdomainname.com/favicon.ico

And that’s it my friends!

As simple as that.

Until tomorrow, ciao ciao!

Love, me
