Blogging Yourself to Death: Time management
February 17th, 2008.
Once you’ve invested the initial hours in creating your blog, the blog will begin to take over your life.
You will dream of blogs; first thing in the morning you will check your stats; your better half will begin to complain.
So, it is essential to develop some time management skills.
Here are some easy to follow steps for making the most of your blog time
Step 1: Make a set time for daily blogging… Try to work early in the morning; it’s the most productive time.
Make a mug of coffee or green tea and, before turning the computer on, make a ‘To Do’ list.
Often you get caught-up in small, unimportant tasks. Keep your to do list visible! If you stick to your list, you can avoid this time-trap!
Step 2: Prioritize the list. Decide what is urgent and place it at the top of the list.
Step 3: Specify time limits and set an alarm to make sure you stick to them.
Step 4: At the end of your allocated time, look back and decide if you used your time well. Be honest.
What distracted you? Avoid them tomorrow…
Here are some common distractions, and their alternative…
Television: you might switch it on to keep you company. Put on some music instead, it won’t draw your eyes away from the screen.
Coffee or beverages: make a big thermos full. Time spent in the kitchen preparing snacks and drinks is the most common form of procrastination.
Skype and MSN: it is good to be contactable. However, both of these consume big chunks of time. Switch them off when you are working.
Facebook: The only solution with this addiction is - try to cancel your subscription, if that is possible…
And then when you are not working… turn you computer off and walk away. Go outside and live life!
Until next time!
