Day 1: How to blog in 7 days

February 8th, 2008.

Who are you?

Setting up your blog

‘Let’s start at the very beginning…’ Answer these simple questions: who are you? What are you writing about? How will you publish your blog?

Who are you?
Are you a rebellious student with an infinite bag of corn chips? Perhaps you are an over-achiever. Draw an image of yourself (stereotypes and stick men allowed).

What are you writing about?
Who you are will influence what you write. The student will probably write about personal exploits and cynical views. The over-achiever will voice concerns.

How will you publish your blog?
Using blogging software is advantageous, even if you already have a host:

- Most blogging software is open-source and free, with free templates

- Writing, editing and managing your blog is easier, with the content management systems

- Blog statistics, like traffic to your blog, are easily created

In short, you don’t need a computer geek to create a decent blog.

Here are some of the best free blogging software:

1. Wordpress: easy to install and use; a good range of plugins; a huge online community = great online support; flexible layout

2. Movable Type: a good online community; flexibility with design and layout

3. Blogger: very easy to use; limited layout

5. My Space: legendary; limited layout

6. Live Space: very easy to use; very limited layout

Do you know of any others? Post any queries you might have here or email me. I’ll do my best to help you!

Good luck!

Love,
Me
