How to: Blog and heal the world

Blogging for a cause

Blogs are a powerful form of communication with the masses.

Using your blog skills for a good cause is one of the best ways of earning fuzzy feel-good points!

It is also a great way to get into blogging – if you are blogging everyday, it is important that you have an interest in and a knowledge of the topic.

There are many charities, not-for-profits and non-governmental organisations that would welcome you blogging for their cause.

So, first…

Consider the issue important to you.

Take a look at the website for any organisation fighting for that cause. If you don’t know the URL, Google it.

Most websites will have contact details in the footer.

Send an email to the marketing director, the campaign manager, or anyone with a similar title. (Have a look at this email template for you to adapt.)

Send off as many emails to as many organisations. You may get a few replies rejecting your offer, but chances are you will get more readily accepting your offer.

Secondly…

Do you need to create a blog or do you have one ready to go? Take a peak at How to blog in 7 days for help with setting one up.

Thirdly…

Writing for a cause has very different objectives from writing a personal blog.

Your objectives are probably: to raise awareness by telling people about your cause and to gain support (material or non-material) for the cause.

A blog is a fantastic tool for raising awareness, but is important that you research before you write. Your supporting organisations probably will not appreciate you providing blog visitors with incorrect information.

To gain support, it is important that you present the issue clearly.

Avoid:

- a desperate tone of voice, eg. ‘Please, please, please support us! Oh come on?!’
- sentimentality or melodrama
- an accusing tone of voice. This is a simple sales tactic – make the blog visitor feel they are part of the solution.

As long as you provide relevant information to you visitors in a clear and interesting way, you can leave the decision to support your cause in their hands.

Finally…

Finding a readership is possibly the hardest part of your task – especially as it is better to attract readers who either knew nothing of your cause or did not support it previously.

An easy way of doing this is go onto forums and comment, leaving a link to your blog.

Try to be controversial. Don’t just say what everyone else saying.

Say something that will make people notice you, and click on your link to see what else you have to say.

Until next, good luck with making the world a better place.

Love, me
